UU Lalit New CJI of India: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is appointed as the new Chief Justice of India. He took the oath as the 49th CJI by President Droupadi Murmu on 27 August 2022 at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

He has a short tenure of 74 days and will retire on November 8, 2022, at the age of 65. As per seniority and protocol, the next CJI would be Justice D Y Chadrachud, who will remain in office for two years and retire in 2024.
Before being elevated to the top court in 2014, Justice Lalit was a practicing attorney. His priorities include transparency in listing cases and mentioning urgent matters before respective benches and one Constitution bench throughout the year.

Uday Umesh Lalit was born on 9 November 1957 in Solapur, Maharashtra. His father, U.R. Lalit, was a former Judge of the Bombay High Court, Nagpur and a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India. His grandfather, Ranganath Lalit was also a lawyer and hosted two separate civic receptions when Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru visited Solapur. UU Lalit’s wife, Amita Lalit is a law graduate from Government Law College, Mumbai.

Lalit joined the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in June 1983 as an advocate. He began his training with legal lawyer M.A. Rane, who was regarded as a proponent of the radical humanist school and believed that social work was as important as building a solid legal practice.
In 1985, he shifted his practice to Delhi and joined Senior Advocate Pravin H. From 1986 to 1992, Lalit worked with Soli Sorabjee, the former Attorney General of India in Delhi. On May 3, 1992, Lalit was qualified and registered as an advocate in the Supreme Court. On April 29, 2004, Lalit was appointed as a senior advocate of the Supreme Court.
Lalit was appointed as the special public prosecutor for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by a Supreme Court bench of Justices G. S. Singhvi and Asok Kumar Ganguly for the 2G spectrum cases in 2011. The court stated that Lalit’s appointment was “eminently suitable” in the interest of a fair prosecution of the case. “Thoroughness with the case, patience in clarifying legal questions, and the sober demeanour in presenting the case before the bench” are listed as some of his professional skills.
