He earned rupees 4 lakhs from trading during his college days. But soon he lost all his money. From 2001 to 2005, he worked at a night call centre with a monthly pay of Rs. 8000, for 4 years. During these four years, he saved money for trading.
Along with his brother Nikhil Kamath, Nithin Kamath founded Rainmatter, which is also a fintech company. Nithin Kamath also owns an investment firm, True Beacon, which provides portfolio and tailored investment management services.
Foundation of Zerodha by Nithin Kamath
In 2005 he quit his job and started a portfolio advisory business. In 2009 he focused on creating a broking firm. This idea led to the foundation of Zerodha. His focus was to cut down the brokerage fees charged by other firms.
While other brokerage firms charge a percentage fee per trade, Nithin came up with the idea of flat Rs. 20 per trade. Though the flat fee model was not popular in India, it was much more popular in the US since the 1990s.
Also, he wanted Zerodha to be much more transparent than other brokerage firms.
Zerodha is an English + Sanskrit word. The motive behind the name Zerodha is that; Zero means no, while ‘Rodh’ in Sanskrit means obstacle. Hence, the name Zerodha means no obstacle.
In September 2011, The Economic Times featured Zerodha as an online discount broking firm. That one article has brought more new customers to the firm.
In 2016, the account opening process became online with the help of Aadhar. Customers can do their KYC online from the comfort of their homes. It was the time when Zerodha scaled lakhs of customers.
